Qantas finally finished re-building their online booking engine yesterday, which will finally allow you to book both classic awards and paid flights on the one ticket.
This is a great improvement if you wanted to book the outbound flight as an award and the return as paid ticket. You can now do it all in the one booking.
Another change introduced was the ability to also pay for the taxes and fuel surcharges with points for international flights. Now while this may not suit everyone, it can make it easier to use all points for award flights.
An example is Melbourne to London. Currently it is 64,000 points and around $330 in taxes. Using points to pay for the entire trip bumps it up to 99,100. Now while for some it may not be an effective use of your points, it is certainly a good option for many. Of course you can adjust the points using the slider to a level that suits you.

The other teaser on the email was an offer of Status Credits.
Well AusBT and the Frequent Flyer can exclusively reveal that for a limited time Qantas will give you Status Credits on some Classic Award bookings. Here are the details:
Offer for flights booked between the 30th October and 31st December 2013 for travel until 2014.
The offer is for economy only and you earn discount Status Credits. On the Melbourne – London one way flight you would collect 60 Status Credits.
Now although this is a limited offer, we are hopeful that Qantas will introduce this permanently and in all cabin classes. It would certainly be an improvement for it’s many members rather than many of the changes that have been not in favour for flyers.
For those frequent flyer junkies, Qantas also has no plans to remove the Marginal Any Seat Awards.
